"By the beginning of April 1918 the Portuguese had been continually on the frontline for a very long time. The 1st Division had been in the trenches for nine months; some of its battalions had been in the line for a full year. The 2nd Division had been in the line for five months, some of its units had spent eight months in the line. [...] On 6 April the 1st Division was withdrawn from the line after a year at the front.
